2008 Annual Report for The Otetiana Council of The Boys Scouts of America

  • A financial reporting requirement

  • Creating strategic collateral to increase fundraising and volunteerism

  • Sharing stories of scouting in a deeply human way

  • For the Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America here in Rochester, NY, I partnered with photographer John Myers to concept and execute their 2008 annual report in a manner that would celebrate the council’s efforts to strengthen families and our community through scouting.

We wanted to tell personal stories of scouting’s impact on those involved. I developed the concept of Found & Lost. We told stories of what people found through the scouting experience and also expressed that these stories would be lost without critical community support.

John captured beautiful portraiture of our subjects. I took the copy developed by Scott and hand wrote every word in pencil (including all the financial data required by an annual report) to give this design piece an intensely personal and human quality to it.

Well, the council loved it. It helped generate the support they need to run their operations and we picked up some recognition along the way. This annual report won Best of Show at the American Advertising Awards, plus distinctions at both the district and national level. It was also recognized by Print Magazine and Communication Arts. It’s always fun to dive into a long format print piece.
